Scotland’s Six Nations campaign got off to a glorious start as the team beat England at home 11-6 on Saturday, February 6th. This was Scotland’s first win over England at Twickenham Stadium since 1983. Here’s how the match played out:
- Two minutes in and England concedes a penalty as Jonny Hill comes off his feet in a ruck five yards (4.5 meters) from Scotland’s try line. Scotland wins the ball in three consecutive line outs and march towards England’s try line.
- England is strong in defense, but Scotland is awarded a fourth penalty and opt to attempt to kick a penalty goal for an early lead. Fin Russell’s boot is accurate, which puts Scotland ahead 3-0 with only six minutes played.
- 24 minutes into the game, Billy Vunipola is shown a yellow card by the referee for a high tackle on Scotland’s Fin Russell, which means he is ‘sin binned’, unable to participate for 10 minutes. This leaves England temporarily with 14 players on the field. By now, England has already conceded eight penalties.
- Scotland’s strong performance in a series of scrums enables Fin Russell to chip kick the ball across to Duhan van der Merwe who narrowly misses scoring a try. Scotland’s attacking game is now putting immense pressure on England.
- A high kick from Fin Russell gets the ball into England’s 22. From there, a series of clean passes put the ball into the hands of Duhan van der Merwe, who scores the only try of the match.
- Scotland misses the 2-point try conversion but takes an 8-0 lead almost 32 minutes into the game.
- Scotland’s Rory Sutherland gets caught offside at a tackle, and England is awarded a penalty. Owen Farrell takes the penalty kick and slots the ball though the posts from 40 yards (36.5 meters) away.
- Fin Russell trips England’s Ben Youngs, an illegal move, and receives a yellow card from the referee, which means he is sin-binned for 10 minutes. England is awarded another penalty. Owen Farrell kicks the ball over for three more points.
- It’s half time and Scotland is in the lead 8-6.
- Scotland is still down to 14 men for the first eight minutes of the second half because of the yellow card carrying over from the first half. Yet, the Scottish team still manages to hold England off. On his return from the sin bin, Fin Russell scores three more points for Scotland after England concede an offside penalty and Russell successfully kicks the penalty goal.
- For the remainder of the second half, Scotland continues to be strong in attack and denies England any chance of scoring. England eventually shows some strength in attack, but it’s too late and Scotland takes the win 11-6.
